Full Description

Terrace of 4 houses. 1870-80. Built by John Bellerby. Yellow brick, with mottled red brick at rear, and with some stone dressings. Slate roof. EXTERIOR: symmetrical terrace of 2 storeys plus attic. Each house has 3 main bays and has sashes without glazing bars, with segmental arches which have keystones. A moulded string course links the 1st floor window sills, and below there are 2 other interrupted string courses. At eaves level there is a moulded cornice. No.140, at the left of the terrace, has a wider left-hand bay which has a pair of windows on the ground floor projecting forwards as a straight-sided bay window under a slate roof. On the 1st floor there are 3 windows separated by pilasters, the middle one wider. At attic level there is a shaped gable with coping and ball finials, with blind recesses to each side of a taller centre which has a pediment carried on pilasters, and a round-headed window. The central bay has 2 first-floor windows above a doorway with a segmental pediment carried by pilasters, flanking an architrave with semicircular head. Above the door, which has 6 raised and fielded panels with bolection mouldings, there is a semicircular overlight. The right-hand bay has a brick canted bay window on the ground floor, a pair of windows on the 1st floor, and a pedimented brick attic dormer. No.138 mirrors No.140, except that the right-hand bay has less emphasis. The ground-floor windows match those of the 1st floor, and the shaped attic gable is lower, with a central segmental pediment. Nos 136 and 134 exactly mirror Nos 140 and 138. Ridge chimneys to left and right and between houses. INTERIOR: not inspected.
