Type and Period (1)
Aerial reconnaissance on 13-MAR-2002 identified the partial earthwork remains of a Roman temporary camp. One curved right-angled corner and approximately 50m of each of the north-east and south-east sides is visible. The site lies 300m to the north east of another Roman camp (SE 65 SW 385) and is on the same alignment. This may be one of the eight Roman camps to the north of York alluded to by antiquarian writers, two others have previously been identified at Bootham Stray (SE 55 SE 19 and 66).
SE 62095469. Part of a Roman camp on Huntington South Moor. The site was not identified until 2002, but RAF photographs taken in the early 1950s show the full extent of the camp prior to the construction of the sports stadium which now overlies the eastern part of the camp. The photographs depict the site as playing card shaped, with the low bank and outer ditch forming a round cornered rectangle. The camp's long axis runs north east to south west. The surviving remains include the western corner of the camp, which is the best preserved section, though further earthworks are still traceable on the ground. The site has been interpreted as either a practice camp, constructed for training purposes, or a temporary camp, occupied during the construction of the fortress of Eboracum in the early 70s AD. Scheduled. (2)
The partial earthwork remains of the probable Roman camp described by the previous authorities were seen centred at SE 6206 5469 and mapped from aerial photographs taken on 27-MAR-2002 during English Heritage aerial reconnaissance. The estimated centre of the camp would have been at SE 6212 5470.
Only the western corner and parts of the NW and SW sides could be seen. (3)
