Abstract/Summary
An archaeological excavation was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Ltd on land to the east of New Lane, Huntington, north of the City of York. The work was undertaken to satisfy a condition attached to the grant of planning consent for a residential development.
The purpose of the excavation was to determine the date of a pair of parallel linear features discovered during the 2021 evaluation of the site (OSA21EV08), which appeared to respect the presence of the Roman practice camp to the northeast corner of the site.
The investigation consisted of a 30m by 20m trench spanning both linears to allow for a twenty percent sample excavation of each feature. This revealed that the features were datable to the early modern/modern era and were likely to be associated with Huntington Grange. The features would seem to represent a trackway using the earthwork remains of the camp as a visible and well known feature in the local environment.
No further archaeological investigation is required during the development.
