Full Description
VILLAGE HAS A MEDIEVAL CORE LEADING TOWARDS THE PALACE WHICH WAS BUILT BY 1241.
Bishopthorpe is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Badetorp, a total of four entries are
listed: Entry 1- Value in 1086 = £1, 4 villagers, 1 ploughland, Hugh son of Baldric is the lord. Entry
2 - 1 ploughland, King William is the lord. Entry 3 - Value in 1086 = £0.2, 4 villagers, 0.3
ploughland, Thorkil is the lord. Entry 4 - Value in 1086 = £0.3, 0.3 ploughland, Landric the
carpenter is the lord.
In 1202 the Prior and Monks of St. Andrew, Fishergate, built a church in the village, again
dedicating it to the patron saint. By 1241 a Manor House and Chapel had been built next to the
river by Archbishop Gray. Therefore by 1275 the area name is written Biscupthorpe.
By the early 1820’s Bishopthorpe had a population of 301.
