Full Description

YAT report:
The present building, built as a concrete works before 1962. Although relatively unaltered, most
of the original machinery has been removed, leaving only an extensive ventilation system,
serving a system of bays. The building was originally open; however, the west range has since
been partitioned into a series of smaller spaces, perhaps to serve as subsidiary workshops or
storerooms.
The single storey block to the north is constructed in a different style to the rest of the building,
suggesting it may have been a later addition. However, the style is that of the late 50s or 60s
and the block appears on the earliest map depicting the whole building. The interior of the block
could not be accessed but its appearance suggests use as an office.
The remnants of the narrow-gauge railway in the car park corresponds with the tramway
depicted in early OS maps and aerial photographs. The tramway was designed to move goods
between the previous concrete works, its yard and the railway to the east of the site. The
tramway bears no association with the current building and would have become obsolete with
the introduction of forklift trucks.

The building no longer functions as a concrete depot or works and has been used as a car park
and more recently a store for the National Railway Museum. Demolished 2021.
