Full Description

Coffin. Said to be Roman. Millstone grit. Approximately 1.25 metres x 0.5 metres x 0.25 metres. Simple coffin with chamfered lid. Found in 1838 in a neighbouring field. 'The Church of St Mary, Askham Richard, Historical Notes'.

NMR Information:

[SE 5371 4801] A Roman stone coffin, preserved in Askham Richard
burial ground, was found in a neighbouring field c. 1886. (1)

The coffin, situated at SE 53684799, is in a good state of
preservation. The Rev. J. Meanley stated that it had been found in
a field (still called coffin field) centred at SE 53804900 in 1838.
It was removed to the churchyard in 1903. See G.P. AP.63.107.6. (2)
