Full Description

Phase 1- 10th Century-Early 11th Century Timber Buildings/Industrial activity evidence
Earliest material on site dated to the early 10th Century and consisted of several wicker fence lines and wooden posts. This may be interpreted as a passageway leading back from Walmgate. To the west a dark brown organic deposit was laid down and to the east of the passageway slightly organic clay flooring materials, suggesting a domestic building (A). The building and passageway appear to have been demolished and two levelling deposits laid down perhaps within or for a larger building (B). Two leather offcut fragments were recovered and may indicate that leather working was being carried out close by. Two posts were inserted on the south side of the lift shaft area. These may have acted as uprights within the new building. Evidence suggests wool processing and dying may have taken place on site.
A possible third timber building is suggested due to evidence of levelling deposits and an isolated sub-rectangular post-hole (C). Building demolished, with possible evidence of metalworking, although evidence slight.
Two further buildings erected on site with evidence suggesting these were on a different street layout to modern day (D,E). Evidence for their demolition and another building constructed (F).
