Summary

Excavations at the Lloyds Bank site, 6-8 Pavement, in 1972 found a succession of waterlogged deposits preserving the structures and products relating to leather working. Oak sill beams and wattle walling of the buildings survived, and the remains of a hide stretcher were found. Two phases of leather making were identified, both preparation of the leather and the final cutting to make shoes, straps and belts. Numerous offcuts and finished products were found.
