Full Description

There is a short account of the excavations in 1939 for the air raid shelter near the present West Offices (an area then known as Old Station Yard) in Royal Commission on Historical Monuments The City of York Vol 1 Eburacum Roman York (1962),p51, Fig.39 (section showing position of shelter within the ramparts and access tunnel for telephone links) and a plan showing the limit of the excavations for the shelter as Fig.46 on p.56. Professor Sir Ian Richmond (then in 1939 a young archaeologist on a visit to York) had inspected the tunnel and the structures, evidently the Roman City Wall, found within it - but was only allowed a few minutes to observe and record.
