Full Description

Coal drop retaining walls on Leeman Road. The retaining wall consists of a free-standing, buttress retaining wall constructed of masonry where the buttresses and wall retain Cinder road above.

As part of the York Central works the internal ground level within the coal drops was raised by 2m.

Prior to the infilling works (2023) the strucutres had been impacted by WWII bombing and unsympathetic alterations in the 20th century such as the removal of the arches. More recently the strucutres were impacted upon by intrusive unmanaged vegetation and services/drain installation.
The best survival of original fabric is in the lower areas now covered over (Toby Kendall TetraTech 2024 Pers Comm.)
