WB during ground investigations carried out by Soil Engineering and comprising the excavation of three test pits and the drilling of five boreholes located on land at the ‘Hutments’ site, adjacent to the Guildhall Annex, and within a small yard on the eastern side of the Guildhall. The investigations identified made ground of probable post-medieval date, which extended to a depth of over 1.5m from the existing ground level. Deposits of an archaeological nature dating to the medieval period or earlier were identified below the made ground, up to a depth of 8m below the existing ground level. These comprised wet or waterlogged grey silts, silty clays and peaty alluvial deposits some of which contained organic material, including wood fragments. Finds including pottery, animal bone and ceramic building material (CBM) dating from the early medieval period to post-medieval period were recovered during the works. These results indicate significant archaeological deposits are present below the made ground deposits on the land flanking the River Ouse in the vicinity of the Guildhall.
