Abstract/Summary

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by On-Site Archaeology Ltd at Novotel, Fewster Way, York, during groundworks associated with the construction of an extension to the southern end of the existing hotel. The investigation involved monitoring of a trench excavated in advance of piling. The monitoring of the piling preparation trench revealed a sequence of deposits probably of a 19th – 20th century date. The earliest deposit was a probable alluvium deposit associated with the River Foss located a short distance to the west. Above this was a sequence of dumping deposits probably associated with the former 19th to 20th century glass factory. No archaeological features, deposits or finds associated with the earlier pre-19th century occupation of the site were detected.
