Abstract/Summary

An archaeological trial trench evaluation was carried out by On-Site Archaeology on land to the rear of 2 The Crescent, York. This was carried out in advance of the submission of a planning application for the construction of three new dwellings in an existing walled garden and followed pre-application advice issued by the City of York Council. The work consisted of the hand excavation of a single 3m x 3m evaluation trench located within garden. This revealed natural deposits at a depth of 0.50m below the modern ground surface. Several pits, all containing medieval pottery, were recorded cutting into the natural. These were sealed by a dump deposits and modern topsoil. No Roman period features were recorded despite the location of the site within a known Roman cemetery, close to a Roman road. Occasional Roman artefacts were recovered from the medieval and later deposits.
