road. Test Hole 2 indicated some compacted hardcore and whilst this might have been an attempt to provide the road with a solid base it might also have been simply pothole filling at some time. That this might be the case was indicated by Test Hole 3, which though it had some brick and tile fragments these notably lacked the density to be regarded specifically as hardcore. Overall it seems that the road was never worked over with a proper compacted hardcore base and as long suspected, is of very poor makeup.
