Abstract/Summary

The analysis was undertaken by MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd., under instruction from Persimmon Homes Yorkshire, to evaluate the surviving sub-surface archaeology at the Bootham Crescent Football Ground, prior to the construction of for the erection of 93 dwellings with associated infrastructure and landscaping. The Archaeological Evaluation Trenches were excavated and recorded in May 2021, August 2022, and October 2022. A metal detector survey was undertaken in the area of the trenches on the pitch, as there were in-situ cask ash burials on the pitch. Nine trenches were excavated in total. There were no high responses relating to ash cask burials were found in the location of the pitch trenches. Two furrows were encountered on two of the tenches which had medieval and post-medieval finds, and a single shred of medieval pottery was noted from the rubble from the area of the demolished gymnasium.
