Title The Judges Lodging, Lendal
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2022

Abstract/Summary

The aim is to inform a planning application for proposed renovations at the Grade I Listed Judge’s Lodging, Lendal, York, and at the adjacent Grade II Listed Lendal House and Joseph Terry House. The archaeological assessment has established that there is potential for the survival of the remains of the south-west wall and interval tower of the Roman legionary fortress within the study site. To the north of the line of the fortress wall, there is potential for the survival of inhumation burials within the area of the former cemetery of the medieval St Wilfrid’s Church. Numerous burials have been identified through archaeological investigation, lying immediately below the modern ground surface. Work should only be undertaken following the agreement of a suitable programme of archaeological mitigation
