Abstract/Summary

York Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation at the site of the former Tramways Club, George Street, York to establish the presence of any archaeological remains prior to development. The project involved the excavation of three trial trenches: Trench 1 uncovered no archaeological remains, only geological sands, gravels and clay, with modern truncations present. Trench 2 contained some remains of former post-medieval terraced housing, and a buried subsoil deposit containing residual pottery sherds dating to the Roman period and a CBM fragment dating to the 13th to 16th century. Trench 3 contained only remains of the former terraced housing, with geological sands located in one small section of the trench.
