Description

The site had previously been subject to evaluation in May 2019, prior to submission of the planning application, in the form of a single hand excavated trial trench. The current investigation initially comprised the excavation of a further evaluation trench, followed by a watching brief during development groundworks. The initial evaluation trench had been located within the north-eastern part of the site, close to the rear of the historic extant building of 2 The Crescent. Evaluation Trench 2 was located towards the southwestern limit of the site, further away from the standing building. This trench was excavated to a depth of just over 1m. Natural deposits were not encountered. The only deposits recorded were modern topsoil and a thick early modern levelling deposit, that is likely to relate to landscaping associated with the development of the area in the 19th century. Three small test pits excavated at the same time as evaluation Trench 2, along the line of the former garden boundary wall only recorded similar, recent landscaping deposits. The watching brief comprised the archaeological monitoring of excavations for the foundations for the new build dwellings located within the former garden. These excavations were designated as Trench 3.
