This desk-based assessment has been undertaken to provide background information to support planning applications. The archaeological significance of the study area was assessed using a variety of sources including cartographic evidence, the York HER and published archaeological and historical reports. The site is located with the York Central Historic Core Conservation Area and includes several Listed Buildings. This assessment of the archaeological potential of the site has indicated that the site is likely to contain features of Roman, Anglo-Scandinavian, medieval and post-medieval/early modern date. The site is located within the City Centre Area of Archaeological Importance. This assessment has indicated that the site lies immediately outside the Roman fortress, including the line of a significant Roman road, in an area of extra-mural settlement and waterfront development.
