Summary

14 and 14A Front Street. Long former manor house; two storeys and four bays, now two houses. Late 15th or early 16th century with later alterations, including some at the end of the 19th century. Restored 1987. Timber-framed, with brick casing which is partly covered by painted render. Pantiled roof. Mix of Yorkshire and horizontal sashes. Rendered and whitewashed.

Full Description

House, now 2 houses. Late C15 or early C16 with later alterations, including some at the end of the C19. Restored 1987. Timber-framed, with brick casing which is partly covered by painted render. Pantiled roof. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. The windows are either horizontal or vertical sliding sashes and all have glazing bars. At the left there is one bay of exposed brick which has a vertical sash on the ground floor and a horizontal sash above. To the right there are 3 bays which have horizontal sashes. On the ground floor the outer bays have sashes in 3 sections and the central bay has a doorway. To the right there is a second doorway, with one bay to its right which has vertical sashes. The doorways have pilaster doorcases with modillion cornices, and have panelled doors. Ridge chimneys to right of left-hand bay and to right of 4th bay. To the left there is a lower wing rebuilt in the C20, with 2 boarded garage doorways with segmental arches. The right-hand (north) gable wall of the house has a vertical glazing bar sash window on the ground floor. INTERIOR: not inspected. RCHM records massive internal timber-framing visible. Some warping of wall but appears structurally sound. Timber windows and doors OK. Roofline slightly warped but structure good. Render cracked in parts. Attached sketch shows 14 Front Street in foreground with 16 Front Street in righthand corner.
