Full Description
Pair of locks. 1757 and 1887-89. John Fowler, engineer and Nelson and Co., contractors of New Lock, for Ouse Navigation. Ashlar walls with timber and cast-iron gates, bridges and winding gear. Locks have central island with pointed ends. Each lock has ashlar sides with 2 pairs of plank gates surmounted by walkways, some with clews by Adams Hydraulics Ltd., York and London, and with stanchions with chains between. To each bank a cast-iron swing bridge with lattice parapet. 8 pairs of winches, 4 per lock. One winch for opening gate. Old Lock and adjacent dam built at a cost of £10,000, New Lock, offices (q.v.) and workshops (q.v.) built at a cost of £14,098. Carridge, William, Ouse Bridge to Naburn Lock, 1890, pp 493-505.
