Title Naburn Lock
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2018

Abstract/Summary

The heritage statement and building appraisal is created to inform the proposal to build hydro-power generator on the western side of the island at Naburn Locks adjacent to the weir to reduce the risk of flooding the River Ouse, and produce electric power. The island and surrounding land contains a number of heritage assets in the form of the larger Naburn lock, a former mill and windmill, ridge and furrow in the surrounding fields and a prehistoric ring ditch and trackway. The development requires the removal of the upstanding, and below ground remains of the three-storey ancillary building to the former mill, which currently stands as part of a walled garden feature. The development likely impacts these remains and those that runs under the island. The most significant impact on the setting of the heritage assets would occur from distant views, namely along the south-west bank of the River Ouse, and to the northwest of the island, where the assets can be seen as a group. A visual impact of the development may occur to the east of the weir, where the new hydro-powered generator is proposed.
