Route record MYO5233 - Roman street
Summary
Street represented by Micklegate between Barker Lane and Micklegate Bar but not directly beneath it. At Barker Lane it diverges east to the post Roman river crossing at Ouse Bridge. The Roman street continued NE although was eventually blocked by a large columnaded building (MYO5233). In 1910 it was found just inside Micklegate Bar. In 1821 it was found under the front of the terrace houses 78-82 Micklegate at a depth of 9ft. It had kerbstones at least 1ft deep and stone paving.
Possibly seen on the corner of Queen St (2022), Micklegate sewer repairs (2005) at 15.6m AOD, and possibly at the front of 127 Micklegate (2023) as a cobble layer in clay at 17.33m AOD above natural at 17.03m AOD. This is similar to observations at 138 Micklegate.
