Description
CONSTRUCTION WORK
Excavations for cellars and foundations of three new houses at the corner of Micklegate and Barker Lane in 1821 revealed many burials and masses of human bones at a depth of 2-12 feet, probably the churchyard of St Gregory's church. Also a gravel surface at a depth of 9 feet, diverging from the line of Micklegate, probably the main Roman road from the south-west. Also 'wrought stones forming compartments', perhaps stone buildings lining one side or other of the road.
